Mediation Across the North East
Independent civil, commercial and workplace mediation with specialist panels and confidential appointments online or in person by arrangement.
Finding mediation across the North East
This regional page covers mediation enquiries across North East England, including disputes involving parties in more than one city or county. EDR offers a national, specialist-panel appointment model: the mediator is considered against subject matter, independence and practical suitability, with remote participation or an agreed venue as options.
Using this regional hub: This regional hub is intended for cross-area enquiries rather than implying a local EDR office in Newcastle or any other city.
Whether you are an individual, business owner, solicitor, adviser or HR professional, an initial enquiry helps identify the dispute type, parties involved, mediator suitability and practical arrangements. EDR does not offer appointments as an accredited consumer ADR provider for regulated consumer-contract disputes.
Choose the right geographic starting point
This hub covers enquiries across North East England rather than linking to artificial city landing pages. You can contact EDR directly wherever in the region the dispute arose.
Wider regional coverage
Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Sunderland and surrounding areas.
Durham, Chester-le-Street, Bishop Auckland and surrounding communities.
Morpeth, Hexham, Alnwick and surrounding communities.
Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and neighbouring areas.
Coordinating a regional case: Parties in different parts of the North East, or with advisers elsewhere in England and Wales, can consider remote attendance. In-person arrangements are discussed only if the dispute and mediator availability make them suitable.

Regional disputes can involve different advisers, businesses or participants spread across several places. These examples explain how a single coordinated mediation may help.
Engineering and project performance
Complex projects can involve payment disputes, scope changes, delay or technical disagreement. Mediation gives project stakeholders a structured opportunity to assess financial and operational options together.
Trading and supply-chain relationships
Where parties disagree on delivery, quality or contract termination, a mediator can help explore future trading, correction and orderly exit terms.
Property occupation and development
Property owners, businesses and advisers may disagree on repairs, access, occupation or development obligations. Negotiation can concentrate on implementable outcomes.
How EDR identifies a suitable mediator
A mediator does not determine legal rights or impose a settlement. EDR considers the specialist subject, independence, potential conflicts, availability, experience and appropriate participation before an appointment is confirmed.
Initial enquiry
Outline the dispute and who is involved.
Suitability and conflicts
Consider the panel, independence and process.
Agree arrangements
Confirm mediator, fees, participants and format.

Online mediation for parties across North East
Yes. EDR offers online civil, commercial and workplace mediation for suitable disputes. Participants can usually join from different places, including their workplace, home or solicitor’s office, without travelling to a shared venue. A secure video meeting can be considered where it is appropriate, accessible and agreed by the parties.
Before the session
We consider suitability, confidentiality, technology, access needs, attendees and the availability of appropriate private spaces. Practical arrangements and any documents to exchange are agreed in advance.
During mediation
The mediator facilitates discussion and may meet parties together or separately as the process requires. Participation, confidentiality expectations and the handling of sensitive material are addressed for the particular case.
When in-person is preferable
Online mediation is not compulsory or right for every dispute. Accessibility, safeguarding, technical constraints, participant preference or case complexity may make an agreed in-person or hybrid approach more suitable.
Our Mediators’ Green Pledge commitment
EDR is a signatory to the World Mediators Alliance on Climate Change (WoMACC) Mediators’ Green Pledge. We encourage online mediation where appropriate and acceptable to those involved, alongside avoiding unnecessary travel and paper documents. Online services still have an environmental footprint; the aim is to make proportionate, responsible choices, not to claim zero emissions.
Read the Green Pledge principles. This is a voluntary signatory commitment, not an environmental certification or a condition of using EDR.

Mediation in North East: questions and answers
Does North East coverage include Teesside?
The regional directory includes enquiries from Teesside as well as Tyne and Wear and County Durham. Suitability and mediator availability are considered case by case.
Can disputes involving multiple North East offices be mediated in one process?
Potentially, provided the relevant parties agree, the issues fall within an appropriate scope and a mediator can be appointed without conflicts.
Do both parties need to agree to mediation?
Mediation ordinarily requires willing participation from the people or organisations involved. Court directions, ADR obligations and legal deadlines should be discussed with your legal advisers where relevant.
Will the mediator decide who is right?
No. The mediator remains impartial and facilitates negotiation. Settlement terms are for the parties to agree; legal advice may be appropriate before any document is signed.
Does EDR handle regulated consumer-contract ADR complaints?
No. EDR does not currently accept appointments as an accredited consumer ADR provider for regulated consumer-contract disputes. If a sector-approved scheme is required, use an appropriate provider.
Discuss mediation in North East
Tell us about the issue, the parties involved, relevant advisers and your preferred format. EDR can consider the appropriate specialist panel and next steps without presuming a mediator appointment is available before checks are completed.
Experienced mediator interested in an EDR panel?
EDR is developing specialist panels across England and Wales. Applicants with relevant registration, accreditation and subject expertise can review panel standards and the appointment approach. Panel membership is subject to vetting.
